Kolkata: Indian Super League franchise FC Goa have announced the arrival of former Barcelona B captain Sergio Juste Marin, popularly known as ‘Chechi’ as their fifth overseas signing for ISL 2017-18.
The defender joins Bruno Pinheiro, Ferran Corominas, Ahmed Jahouh and Manuel Arana as the fifth foreign player for FC Goa.
Sergio is a product of the famous La Masia academy that has produced players like Lionel Messi, Andre Iniesta, Xavi and other famous stars.
“I look forward to playing for FC Goa. This is a new challenge for me and I will be playing outside of Spain for the first time. I thank the club for their faith in my abilities and hope that I can repay that faith with my performances for the team,” said Sergio.
He added further, “There are already few other players from Spain and with that in mind, I think I will be able to slot in the team’s style of play very easily.”
He has earlier played for clubs like Gimanstic Tarragona and CE L’Hospitalet that plays in the Segunda division (second division Spanish football league) and was a free agent before penning a deal with FC Goa.
The 25-year old who has been captain of the Barcelona B team in his four years at the club, is a versatile defender and can play in multiple positions at the back-line.
New FC Goa head coach Sergio Lobera Rodriguez has already bought as many as three players from his native Spain, so as to quickly incorporate the Spanish football philosophy among the players. He became the head coach after the departure of Brazilian Zico.
Having already signed five overseas players, the ‘Gaurs’ can now sign three more foreigners in order to complete their 25-men squad.
The Indian Super League begins on the month of November and is set to have 10 teams competing for the coveted trophy. FC Goa who finished at the bottom of the table last season will look to put up a strong fight in order to become title contenders and the former Barcelona player’s inclusion will undoubtedly be a huge boost to their team.
