London: Ace shuttlers PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth battled their way into the second round with hard fought wins, but it was curtains for former finalist Saina Nehwal, who went down 14-21, 18-21 to defending champion Tai Tzu Ying, to crush out.
While Sindhu defeated Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand 20-22, 21-17, 21-9 to advance, Srikanth braved his way into the next round after defeating Brice Leverdez of France 7-21, 21-14, 22-20.
In a game she was expected to cakewalk through, Sindhu unexpectedly started with a loss in the opening set but bounced back in the other two to clinch the game.
Saina though had no such comfort and despite the resilient that she put up against world no 1 Ying, she fell behind early and never managed to fight her way back in the opening set eventually going down 14-21.
Saina however looked more confident in the second set and took a lead at one point before Ying surged ahead from there to seal the game 18-21 and the match.
Srikanth meanwhile had a similar match as Sindhu, losing the opening set before bouncing back in the next two.
B Sai Praneeth also joined Saina on the plane back home, losing 13-21, 21-15, 21-11 to fifth seed Korean Son Wan Ho, to now out of the competition.
HS Prannoy however continued his spree of defeating opponents higher ranked than him, overcoming the eigth seeded Tien Chen Chou 9-21, 21-18, 21-18 to progress into the next round.
