Teenage Wheelchair Fencer Emanuele Lambertini of Italy has won the Allianz Athlete of the Month honour for October on his outstanding performance at the junior World Championships.
The Italian Wheelchair Fencer, 17, won four medals (two golds) at the International Wheelchair and Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS) U17 & U23 Wheelchair Fencing World Championships. The Italian, born with a rare vascular malformation in the right leg, took the under-17 mixed foil and mixed epee events, coming after he reached the quarterfinals in the men’s foil category A on his Paralympic debut at Rio 2016.
In the public vote, Lambertini received 62 per cent of the votes, which was way ahead of England’s Goalball player Laura Perry who stood second with 31 per cent. Behind these two were Slovakian wheelchair dancing couple Helena Kasicka and Peter Vidasic at a joint third (5 per cent). The Wheelchair racers Tatyana McFadden of the USA and Switzerland’s Marcel Hug were also nominated for the prestigious award. This is a monthly award given to Paralympic Athletes with extraordinary performance during the month.
