Kolkata: In a bid to promote the Government’s “Safe Drive Save Life” campaign and eliminate illegal racing, Leisure Sports Management & Spitfire Motorsports under the aegis of FMSCI (Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India) will conduct a drag race at Rajarhat, Kolkata. The event which, initially was planned for November 2016 will now take place during February 24th- 26th, 2017.
The drag racing event will have various categories of motor sports in both 2-Wheelers and 4-Wheelers (the final list of categories will be known as we move closer to the event time).
The event which anticipates large scale participation of individual racers with all types of cars and bikes. The basic criteria of eligibility include availability of basic safety gears.
The Drag racing event is also an attempt by the organizers to develop Kolkata as a hub for Drag Racing. Before this, most of the activities were based in the southern cities of India, it has tremendous prospect of gaining popularity in the eastern belt (read Kolkata) as well.
Due to the fast, thrilling, fiercer & competitive nature of competition, the participants enjoy the adrenaline rush, and lack of scope, awareness & long term promotion in the East has given birth to illegal Street racing on Public roads. This is something against which the Indian federation wants to hold such event to increase the awareness about the laws.
The event, an acceleration contest, on a track, or Dragstrip, beginning from a standing start between two vehicles over a measured distance, will see a series of competitors battle it out to reign supreme. The Battle Strips are 402 Mts. or 201 Mts. with 2 lanes, which are timed independently.
The winners of the race are decided by the speed; the fastest in each category is declared the winner. A sport, done just for the thrill of it generally, is a popular form of sport in India, with Drag racing having a tremendous scope for exploitation due to the exciting and eye-catching format.
Drag racing is a type of motor racing in which automobiles or motorcycles (usually specially prepared for the purpose) compete, usually two at a time, to be first to cross a set finish line.
