MS Dhoni created record when he became the fifth Indian cricketer and 17th player ever to complete 9000 ODI runs. Dhoni was accoladed with this honorary label during the third ODI between India and New Zealand at Mohali on Sunday. He now shares the band with Sachin Tendulkar (18,426 runs), Rahul Dravid (10,889), Sourav Ganguly (11,363)and Mohammad Azharuddin (9378).
Moreover, Dhoni broke Master Blaster’s record of the highest number of sixes by an Indian batsman in ODIs, hitting his 196th six to overtake Tendulkar’s 195 sixes.
The 35-year-old is also the 3rd wicket-keeper batsman to achieve the feat after Adam Gilchrist (9619) and Kumar Sangakarra (14234).

Sunday innings, which turned out to be special for ‘Mahi’, was haunted by a daunting target of 286 to win. Coming into the third ODI, Dhoni had 8,978 runs from 280 matches for India. He has scored 9 centuries and 60 half-centuries, and averaged 51.01. Dhoni is also the fifth highest run-getter for India in ODIs.
He came up the order at No. 4 after India lost Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma cheaply while chasing 286. The series is level at 1-1.
Dhoni eventually fell for 80, missing out on what would have been his 10th ODI hundred.
