India started their Day four with a medal in Weightlifting as Punam Yadav earned them their fifth gold medal in the women’s 69kg event at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Australia. Yadav won Bronze medal at Glasgow 2014 in the women’s 63 kg.
Punam won Gold with a combined effort of 222 (100 in snatch and 122 in clean and jerk) to take India’s overall medal tally at the Gold Coast Games to seven with 5 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze. At the Carrara Sports Club in Gold Coast, the 22-year-old Punam lifted 95, 98 and 100 in the snatch, and then 118 and 122 in the clean & jerk to finish on 122. Sarah Davies of England took Silver with a total lift of 217 (95 in snatch, 122 in clean & jerk) while bronze went to Apolonia Vaivai of Fiji who finished with 216 (100 in snatch, 116 in clean & jerk).
Writing about her accomplishment, Indian Sports Minister, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore wrote on microblogging site twitter, “Fabulous Five? Bravo Punam Yadav! From a?at #CWG in 2014 to a?at #CWG2018, you have indeed come a long way! Perfect start to the morning. Our weight lifters continue to make Indian flag ?? fly high. #IndiaatCWG.”
Cricketer Ishant Sharma wrote on his twitter handle, “Congrats #PunamYadav on winning GOLD for #India in women’s weightlifting in 69kg ctgy #CWG2018. Great Performance?”
This was India’s 7th medal, with four gold medals; all the medalists came from same sport, i.e. weightlifting. India are lying at the third spot of the medal table with Australia and England above them on the table.
