Bettering from her Silver medal in 10M Air Pistol, Heena Sidhu, a 2014 World No.1 as per ISSF Rankings, won gold in 25M Pistol event at Gold Coast, Australia in the ongoing Commonwealth Games. With this, Sidhu made amend to her forgettable appearance at the event four years back.
Earlier, in 50m Prone event, India’s Gagan Narang, who has eight Gold medals to his name from Commonwealth Games and Chain Singh couldn’t add medals to Indian tally through their performance, as the two finished at no. 7 and no. 4 respectively in the finals.
All eyes were at other medal event in Shooting, the Women’s 25M pistol, where Arjuna Awardee Heena Sidhu & Annu Raj Singh were shouldering India’s hopes. Annu Raj couldn’t add anything to her kitty from the event, while Heena Sidhu became the first Double medalist for India from the mega event.
This is India’s 20th medal from the event and 11th Gold medal for India at Gold Coast. In lead to the Gold medal finish, Sidhu broke the Commonwealth Games record as she scored 38 points. Elena Galiabovitch of Australia won Silver with 35 points, while Malaysia’s Alia Sazana Azahari won Bronze with 26 points.
Annu Raj Singh of India finished at 6th in the final. India would do well to keep their third position on the medal table, as New Zealand at number 4 have 8 Gold Medals and 25 overall medals, Number 5 South Africa have 8 Gold medals and overall 18, while No. 6 Canada have 7 Gold medals and overall 37 medals. Above India on the medal table are England with 23 Gold medals and overall 70 medals and table topper Australia with 41 Gold medals and overall 109 medals so far.
