Colombo: Sri Lankan cricketer Chamara Silva, who had been banned for two years for misconduct has been allowed to take part in domestic cricket, after an appeal made by him, as said by the Sri Lankan cricket board on Sunday.
Last month, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said that a domestic first-class fixture between Kalutara Physical Culture Club and Panadura Cricket Club had not been contested in compliance with the spirit of the sport.
As a result, both the captains-Chamara Silva and Manoj Deshapriya, had been handed two-year bans from all forms of cricket while the players and managers were were banned for one year.
The match wasn’t only declared void but both the clubs had to pay a fine of half a million rupees ($3,300) each. Allegations of match-fixing arose when Panadura won the game on the third day following some unusual scoring. SLC, however denied such claims.
SLC, in a statement on Sunday said, ,”On the recommendation of the appeal’s committee… the accused players would be permitted to engage in domestic cricket activities pending the outcome of their appeal.”
Just a week ago, the International Cricket
Council announced that it would conduct an anti-corruption probe in Sri Lanka after 40 contracted national team players had called for an inquiry into the comments made by former cricketer Pramodya Wickremasinghe.
The former national selector, who was a fast bowler in his playing days in an interaction with a TV channel said the, “unnatural match patterns” and player selections worried him.
The Sri Lankan cricket board said that the players contradicted these allegations by Wickremasinghe as being “totally baseless” and said that they played for their, “motherland…with a 200 per cent committment.”
