Kolkata: Boxer Akhil Kumar, has discontinued his ties with his promoters IOS Boxing Promotions due to an alleged breach contract terms.
In an interaction with PTI, Akhil said, “I have served a legal notice to IOS…it mentions about the breach of the agreement committed by the IOS.”
IOS Boxing Promotions which also manages star boxer Vijender Singh, have however stated that they haven’t received any legal notice from the boxer but also said that they were aware of him having some other plans.
“We have not received any notice from him. But we are aware that he might be having some other plans. We don’t want to comment on the matter since we haven’t got anything,” Neerav Kumar, the managing director of IOS Boxing Promotions as quoted told PTI.
Akhil had penned down a multi-year deal with IOS Boxing Promotions in 2016 where he was assured of six fights in a year. Akhil, who is a 2006 Commonwealth Gold medallist has just participated in one fight where he had emerged victorious.
Naveen Raheja, Akhil’s lawyer contradicted IOS’ claims of not having received any legal notice.
He said, “We have acknowledgment of receipt from them and we have even been approached for a reconciliation after that. There are issues such as pending payments which need to be resolved.
They have not paid his dues and they were unprofessional.”
He also said, “All I can say is that terms of the contract with him were not honoured.”
Akhil, 36, is a former Asian Championships bronze medallist and also a former Olympics quarter-finalist. He was one of India’s stars in the 2008 Beijing Olympics where he handed a shock defeat to the then world no.1 Sergey Vodopyanov. He had turned professional only last year after a fairly decent amateur career in which he had won a bronze medal in the World Cup.
