In the ninth edition of our Tokyo 2021 Summer Games series; today we talk about Vinesh Phogat, the Indian Wrestler. Tokyo Olympics are the thirty second edition of the Summer Olympic & Paralympic Games which were initially scheduled in 2020 but the global pandemic Corona got it postponed by a year almost. The rescheduled edition is planned during July 23- August 8. Here are a few things about Vinesh Phogat that you may not know about her:
Born & Family
Vinesh Phogat was born on August 25, 1994 at Charkhi Dadri, a city in Haryana State of India. Phogat’s father Rajpal Singh Phogat is the younger brother of Dronacharya Awardee Mahavir Singh Phogat, the famous father of Geeta Phogat, Babita Kumari & Ritu Phogat. Her mother is Prem Lata Phogat. Vinesh’s brother is Harvinder Phogat while Priyanka Phogat is her sister. In 2018, Vinesh married wrestler Somvir Rathee. This was about Vinesh Phogat’s family and personal life.
About Vinesh Phogat’s Career
Vinesh Phogat would be exposed to the sport very early in her life thanks to wrestling culture instilled in the family by former India wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat. Vinesh would follow her cousins into the sport as she would first be recognized internationally when she’d win Commonwealth Wrestling Championship Silver in 2013. She had also won the Asian Wrestling Championships bronze that year.
2014 would see Vinesh win the Commonwealth Games gold medal in 48 kg weight category as well as the Asian Games bronze. She would win the Asian Championships 2015 silver. A year later, Vinesh was onto her first Olympic entourage where she was potential contender for the Olympic medal. She’d however crash out in the quarterfinals due to knee injury sustained during the match. Vinesh would win the Asian Championships bronze in 2016.
In the next two years, Vinesh would win 2 Asian Championships silver (one at each year), another Commonwealth Games gold medal and an Asian Games gold medal. 2019 would bring her first World Championships medal, a bronze and an Asian Championships bronze medal. She would win another Asian Championships bronze medal and a gold in 2021 in the same competition before her second journey to the Summer Olympics. Vinesh was trained by her uncle Mahavir Singh Phogat initially and now coached by Woller Akos while she is managed by Cornerstone Sport & Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. Widely known as the one of the top prospects of Indian Medal dreams at the Olympics, here are a few records and honors that tell a lot about Vinesh Phogat:
1. The first Indian Woman Wrestler to win an Asian Games Gold medal (Jakarta 2018).
2. The first Indian Woman Wrestler to win both Commonwealth Games & Asian Games Gold medal (Jakarta 2018).
