In the fourth edition of our Tokyo 2021 Summer Games series; today we talk about Mirabai Chanu, the Indian Weightlifter. Tokyo Olympics are the thirty second edition of the Summer Olympic & Paralympic Games which were initially scheduled in 2020 but the global pandemic Corona got it postponed by a year almost. The rescheduled edition is planned during July 23- August 8. Here are a few things about Mirabai Chanu that you may not know about her:
Born & Family
Mirabai Chanu was born on August 8, 1994 at Imphal, the capital city of Manipur State of India. Her full name is Saikhom Mirabai Chanu. Mirabai Chanu’s father Saikhom Kriti Meitei works at PWD while her mother Saikohm Ongbi Tombi Leima runs a shop. Chanu is the sixth child of her parents. This was about Mirabai Chanu’s family and personal life.
About Mirabai Chanu’s Career
Mirabai Chanu picked Weightlifting in 2006 at the age of 12 and then she would start building a career inspired by Nameirakpam Kunjarani Devi who’s won multiple World Championship and Asian Games medals for India. Her first major tournament came 8 years later as Mirabai would utilize the opportunity to win silver medal at Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games in the 48 kg weight category event. This was her breakthrough performance as she would be Rio bound two years later to embark on her first Olympics journey.
Mirabai Chanu couldn’t fetch any medal at the Rio Olympics but a star that was born in her was not to fade away as she’d go on to win the gold medal of World Championships of Weightlifting in 2017 at Anaheim, USA in same weight category and followed it up with a Commonwealth Games gold medal a year later at Gold Coast, Australia.
Two years later, Mirabai Chanu would climb to the third pedal of podium at the Asian Weightlifting Championships 2020 at Tashkent, Uzbekistan. In 2021, she would win the silver medal in Women’s 49 kg weightlifting to get her name inscribed alongside the Indian legendary Olympians. Her Coach is Vijay Sharma while she’s managed by IOS Sports. Widely known as the one of the prospects of Indian Medal dreams at the Olympics, here are a few awards Mirabai Chanu added to her profile:
1. In 2018, Mirabai Chanu received the fourth highest civilian award of India, Padma Shri, for her sporting excellence.
2. In 2018, Mirabai Chanu received the highest sports award of India, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, for her sporting excellence.
3. In 2021, she embarked on her second Olympic Games journey.
4. In 2021, she climbed the second highest pedal of medal podium, the first Indian Weightlifter to do so.
