In the eleventh edition of our Tokyo 2021 Summer Games series; today we talk about Bajrang Punia, the Indian Wrestler. Tokyo Olympics are the thirty second edition of the Summer Olympic & Paralympic Games which were initially scheduled in 2020 but the global pandemic Corona got it postponed by a year almost. The rescheduled edition is planned during July 23- August 8. Here are a few things about Bajrang Punia that you may not know about him:
Born & Family
Bajrang Punia was born on February 26, 1994 at Jhajjar, a city of Haryana State of India. His father Balvan Singh Punia was a wrestler in his youth. Bajrang’s mother Om Pyari Punia, while his elder brother is Harendra Punia. In 2020, Bajrang married Sangeeta Phogat, the fourth and youngest daughter of Mahavir Singh Phogat & Daya Kaur, sister of Geeta, Babita & Ritu Phogat. This was about Bajrang Punia’s family and personal life.
About Bajrang Punia’s Career
Bajrang Punia picked Wrestling early in his childhood as his father would play wrestling at a local akhada. Bajrang would start his wrestling in one of these akhadas until 2015 when his family would move to Sonepat to get him enrolled with the SAI regional center. Before that, Bajrang had already added a World Championships bronze (2013), Asian Wrestling Championships Bronze & Silver (2013, 2014), an Asian Games Silver (Incheon 2014), and a Commonwealth Games Silver (Glasgow 2014).
Bajrang would win the Commonwealth Wrestling Championship Gold medal in 2016 & 2017, Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games gold medal in 2017, World U23 Wrestling Championships 2017 Silver, Asian Wrestling Championships 2017 gold before entering the year of Asian Games & Commonwealth Games in 2018. 2018 would bring Asian Games & Commonwealth Games Gold medals for Punia and not only that, but World Championships Silver & Asian Wrestling Championships bronze.
In 2019, Bajrang would win Asian Championships Gold and World Championships Bronze medal and he would add two Asian Championships Silver medals in the next two years. Enter 2021, Bajrang Punia would be looking for his first Olympic Games journey and so will be his coach Emzarios Bentinidis and millions of Indian Sports lovers. Bajrang is supported by JSW Sports.
