Today we bring you the Cricketers who scored the most runs in Asia Cup 1988. The Asia Cup was played during October 26- November 4, 1988; 7 matches were played in the tournament. This was the third edition of the continental cricket tournament run by Asian Cricket Council and the edition was hosted by Bangladesh. Four teams were part of the Asia Cup 1988 viz. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh & Sri Lanka. India won their 2nd title at the tournament & Arshad Ayub led the wickets table. Here we discuss the batsmen who hit the most runs in Asia Cup 1988.
5. Aravinda de Silva (Sri Lanka)
Sri Lankan Legendary batsman Aravinda de Silva scored 135 runs from the four matches he played in the tournament with an average of 45 and best score of 69 coming against India at Dhaka on October 29, 1988. With this run aggregate, D’Silva featured into the top 5 list of most runs in Asia Cup 1988. This was the only fifty D’Silva scored in the tournament.
In his best individual score innings’ match, Sri Lanka had batted first and they scored 271/6 with D’Silva’s 69, Samarasekera’s 66 & Arjuna Ranatunga‘s 49 not out. Kapil Dev took two wickets for India. India, in reply, were bowled out for 254 despite Navjot Sidhu’s 50. Kapila Wijegunawardene took 4 while Arjuna Ranatunga took 2 wickets.
4. Athula Samarasekera (Sri Lanka)
Sri Lankan Right-Handed Batsman Maitipage Athula Rohitha Samarasekera scored 140 runs from the four matches he played in the tournament with an average of 46.66 and best score of 66 coming against India in the same match that had Aravinda de Silva also scoring his highest score of the tournament & Sri Lanka winning the contest. With this run aggregate, Athula Samarasekera featured in the top 5 list of most runs in Asia Cup 1988. This was his only fifty from this tournament.
3. Moin-ul-Atiq (Pakistan)
Pakistan Cricketer Moin-ul-Atiq scored 143 runs from the four matches he played in the tournament with an outstanding average of 71.50 and best score of 105 coming against Bangladesh on October 29, 1988. With this run aggregate, Atiq featured into the top 5 list of most runs in Asia Cup 1988. This was the only hundred he scored in the tournament. In his highest score innings match, Pakistan had batted first and scored 284/3 with both Moin-ul-Atiq and Ijaz Ahmed scoring hundreds. Bangladesh, in reply, could manage only 111 for the cost of 6 wickets.
2. Navjot Sidhu (India)
Indian opener Navjot Sidhu scored 179 runs from the four matches he played in the tournament with an average of 59.66 and best score of 76 coming against Sri Lanka on November 4, 1988 in the Asia Cup 1988 final. With this run aggregate, Navjot Sidhu featured into the top 5 list of most runs in Asia Cup 1988. His runs would include three fifties, he was the only batsman to score 3 fifties. In his best score innings, Sri Lanka had batted first and were bowled out for 176 with Kris Srikkanth taking 3 wickets. India chased down the target with 12 plus overs & 6 wickets remaining. Skipper Dilip Vengsarkar scored 50 not out apart from Navjot Sidhu’s score.
1. Ijaz Ahmed (Pakistan)
Pakistan Cricketer Ijaz Ahmed scored 192 runs from the three matches he played in the tournament with an average of 96 and best score of 124 not out coming against Bangladesh in the same match that saw Atiq scoring a century too and Pakistan winning by 173 runs. His runs would have a hundred & a fifty, as he would lead the top 5 list of most runs in Asia Cup 1988.
These were the top scorers in the 3rd edition of the Asia Cup, in 1988. It was a round robin format tournament at group stage with the four teams playing against one another and then the top 2 would go to tournament final to fight out for the trophy.
