Bhopal: BPCL defeated Railways in the title clash of the Obaidullah Khan Heritage Hockey Cup 2016 while Air India won the third place defeating ONGC.
In the final of the Heritage cup, Railways took on BPCL in a gritty encounter that went to a shootout. It took the two teams to enter the second half for the first goal as Railways started the scoreboard ticking in the 40th minute via an Amit Rohidas drag-flick into the BPCL goal. Tushar Khandker scored the equalizer for BPCL in the 47th minute. With the scoreboard even, it was the time for shootout, where BPCL prevailed over Railways by a margin of 3-0 in the first three attempts of the two teams- signalling curtains for the finals. Amit Rohidas was adjudged Man of the Match.
Earlier, in the first match of Wednesday, Air India took on ONGC and within the 8th minute via Arjun Sharma they started the scoreboard ticking to double the lead further in the 17th with a goal by AB Cheeyanna. ONGC came back with a goal in the 18th minute scored by Bikash Toppo, but then this was the last of all goals scored in this match, as Air India prevailed over ONGC 2-1 to secure third position. Gurpreet Singh won the Man of the Match.
In the post event ceremony, Gurpreet Singh (Air India) won the Best Goalkeeper, Manpreet Singh (BPCL) was named the Best Defender, Chinglensana Singh and Affan Yousuf (both Railways) won the Best Midfielder and Best Forward of the Tournament respectively while Tushar Khandker won the Player of the Tournament award.
