Today we bring you the Asian Cricketers who scored the most runs in Asia Cup 1986. The John Player Gold Leaf Trophy was played in March-April 1986, three matches were played during March 30- April 6, 1986. This was the second edition of the continental cricket tournament run by Asian Cricket Council. Three teams were part of the Asia Cup 1986 viz. Bangladesh, Pakistan & Sri Lanka. India had pulled out of the tournament due to strained relations with Sri Lanka. Here we discuss the batsmen who hit the most runs in Asia Cup 1986.
5. Aravinda de Silva (Sri Lanka)
Sri Lanka‘s middle order batsman Aravinda de Silva scored 64 runs from the two matches Pakistan played in the tournament, against Pakistan & Bangladesh, with an average of 32 and best score of 52coming against Pakistan in the final on April 6. With this run aggregate, Aravinda de Silva featured among the top 5 list of most runs in Asia Cup 1986.
Sri Lanka were chasing a target of 192 and they won the match & the trophy with 5 wickets to spare. Arjuna Ranatunga & D’Silva hit fine half-centuries while Captain Duleep Mendis took the team through with a 22 not out from 18 balls. For Pakistan Javed Miandad top scored with 67.
4. Brendon Kuruppu (Sri Lanka)
Sri Lanka’s WK- Opening Batsman Don Sardha Brendon Priyantha Kuruppu scored 67 runs from the three matches Sri Lanka played in the tournament, against Pakistan & Bangladesh, with an average of 22.33 and best score of 34 coming against Pakistan on March 30. With this run aggregate, Brendon Kuruppu featured among the top 5 list of most runs in Asia Cup 1986.
Sri Lanka were chasing a target of 198 by Pakistan who batted first and they were bowled out for 116. His innings went futile as no other Sri Lankan batsman scored 25+ runs.
3. Mohsin Khan (Pakistan)
Pakistan’s Opening Batsman Mohsin Khan scored 74 runs from the three matches at an average of 24.66 and best score of 39 coming against Sri Lanka in the first match on March 30 at P Sara Oval, Colombo. With this run aggregate, Mohsin Khan featured among the top 5 list of most runs in Asia Cup 1986.
Pakistan set a target of 198 for the Sri Lankans which they couldn’t chase as they were bowled out for 116. Zakir Khan, Manzoor Elahi & Abdul Qadir each picked three wickets while Imran Khan picked remaining one.
2. Javed Miandad (Pakistan)
Pakistan’s star batsman Javed Miandad scored 91 runs from the three matches Pakistan played in the tournament, against Sri Lanka & Bangladesh, with an average of 30.33 and best score of 67 coming against Sri Lanka on April 6 in the tournament final at Sinhalese Sports Club Ground, Colombo. With this run aggregate, Mohsin Hasan Khan featured among the top 5 list of most runs in Asia Cup 1986.
Pakistan were batting after being invited to bat first and they scored 191/9 with Manzoor Elahi & Abdul Qadir supporting with 37 & 30 respectively. Pakistan, however, couldn’t win the clash as Sri Lanka won their first Asia Cup title, the John Player Gold Leaf Trophy.
1. Arjuna Ranatunga (Sri Lanka)
Sri Lankan Middle Order batsman Arjuna Ranatunga scored 105 runs from the three matches India played in the tournament, against Bangladesh & Pakistan, with an average of 52.50 and best score of 57 coming against Pakistan in the final of the John Player Gold Leaf Trophy on April 6. With this run aggregate, Arjuna Ranatunga led the top 5 list of most runs in Asia Cup 1986.
Pakistan had set a target of 192 with Miandad’s 67 & Manzoor Elahi’s 37 not out. Sri Lanka chased down the target with 5 wickets to spare. Aravinda de Silva scored 52.
