The craze of T20 cricket first made an appearance at the inaugural T20I World Cup hosted by South Africa in 2007. After the immense success of 2007 ICC T20 World Cup, the next tournament was conducted within 2 years i.e in 2009. The 2009 ICC World Twenty20 was an international Twenty20 cricket tournament which took place in England in June 2009.
It was the second ICC World Twenty20 tournament, following the inaugural event in South Africa in September 2007. 12 teams participated in the tournament which includes the 9 test playing nations and 3 associate nations whose qualification was achieved by the finalists of an ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier held in Belfast from 2–4 August 2008, between Kenya, Scotland, Ireland, Netherlands, Canada and Bermuda. Ireland and the Netherlands, having reached the final, qualified outright, while Scotland won the third-place playoff beating Kenya to also qualify.

Pakistan lifted the cup, beating Sri Lanks in the final. 4. AB de Villiers: 79* runs

In the match against Scotland, he hit 79 runs in 34 balls with a strike rate of 232.35 which stood up at 4th place in the list of the highest scores at T20 World Cup 2009. 3. Sanath Jayasuriya: 81 runs
Sanath Jayasuriya has been at the vanguard of Sri Lanka’s ascent as a cricketing power. During the match between Sri Lanka and West Indies in the 2009 T20 world cup, Sanath hit a massive 81 runs in 47 balls with a strike rate of 172.34 which helped Sri Lanka to win the match against West Indies.

His fantastic innings stood up at 3rd place in the list of the highest scores at T20 World Cup 2009. He hit 10 fours and 3 sixes in his innings.
2. Chris Gayle: 88 runs

Famous for his power-hitting Gayle Storm, Chris Gayle hit 88 runs in 50 balls against Australia with a strike rate of 176 and became the second-highest scores at T20 World Cup 2009. However, his team failed to qualify for the final as they were defeated by Sri Lanka in the semi-final.
1. Tillakaratne Dilshan: 96* runs
Sri Lankan former cricketer Tillakaratne Dilshan was the storming opener. He had a lean patch in 2008 but made a strong comeback in 2009. He smashed 96 runs in 57 balls against West Indies in the semi-final and registered the highest individual total in the tournament.
The explosive batsman helped his team to get into the finals of ICC World Twenty20 in June 2009, picking up the man of the series award for finishing as the leader of the board on the highest scores at T20 World Cup 2009. Although he enjoyed immense success in the tournament, he failed to lead them to victory in the grand-finale against Pakistan.
