The 2nd day of the ATP Cup proved to be an exciting affair with some of the greatest ever players like Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic taking to the Court. The intensity of some of the matches was breathtaking resulting in a few surprising results also. Let’s recap the day 2 matches at all 3 venues of the ATP Cup.
Argentina vs Poland
In the 1st match of the day in Sydney Argentina started on a winning note with Guido Pella winning the 1st singles match in 3 sets. However Poland would come back strongly with Hubert Hurkacz beating Diego Schwatzman in 2 sets and putting his side on level terms.
In the doubles match however the Argentine pair of Máximo González and Andres Moteni proved too strong for the Polish duo of Hurjacz and Lukasz Kubot beating them in straight sets and giving Argentina an early victory with a 2-1 score.
Austria vs Croatia
The evening match at Sydney had two strong sides colliding and was expected to be a thriller. The contest lived up to the expectations from the start. Marin Cilic came back from a set loss and defeated Dennis Novak in 3 sets. Croats would win another singles match with Borna Coric downing Dominic Thiem in 3 sets, in what seemed to be a bit of an upset.
The doubles match also went to Croatia as the duo of Ivan Dodig and Nikola Mektic beat the Austrians in 2 sets comprehensively. The Croats received an overwhelming 3-0 victory over their most formidable opponent of the group.
Japan vs Uruguay
In Perth in the day session Japan would prove too strong for Uruguay with Go Soeda and Yoshohito Nishioka winning both their singles matches comprehensively in straight sets.
Japanese pair of Toshihide Matsui and Ben McLachlan also won the doubles match in 2 sets. The Japanese had a great start to the tournament even after losing their best player Kei Nishikori who opted out due to injury concerns.
Spain vs Georgia
In the evening contest at Perth the Davis Cup champs Spain met Georgia. Roberto Bautista Agut handed a double bagel to his opponent Aleksandre Metreveli winning the match 6-0, 6-0. World Number 1 Rafael Nadal met some resistance from Nickolaz Basilashvili but was again able to close the match in straight sets.
In India: Politics & Entertainment
Spain did not lose a set in doubles also with Pablo Carrero Busta and Feleciano Lopez doing their bit in straight sets. It was an ideal start for the Spanish team who are among the strong favorites to win the tournament.
France vs Chile
In Brisbane France would beat Chile in the day contest with Benoit Paire and Gael Monfils winning both the singles matches. However in doubles the Chilean pair of Christian Garin and Nicolas Jarry who had both played singles matches also and gave registered a win to give their side some hope. France had though won the contest 2 wins to 1 loss.
Serbia vs South Africa
The evening match at Brisbane saw to strong sided up against each other. Dusan Lajovic would come from a set down to win the 1st singles match for his side. The Serb superstar Novak Djokovic faced tough resistance from old foe Kevin Anderson but was able to win the match in 2 set with both going to the tie breakers. This gave Serbia an early lead of 2-0.
In doubles also the Serb side prevailed with Viktor Troicki and Nikola Cacic winning in straight sets. Serbia would thus register a formidable 3-0 victory as the 2nd day of the ATP cup came to an end.
