Tipped to be the next Messi, Mario Gotze’s career fell through midway because of a rare injury and recuperation. He’s come back strongly though, after having been transferred back to his parent club Borussia Dortmund post a two-year stint with Bayern Munich. His goal in extra time in the 2014 FIFA World Cup can never be forgotten, and so we take a look at the Top 5 goals Gotze has scored in his career so far.
5. Borussia Dortmund vs Werder Bremen, 2011-12 Bundesliga
Probably one of the most neat goals on this list, Dortmund man Mario Gotze showed class, calm and composure when he finished into an open net after dribbling past the Bremen goalkeeper and a lunging defender. Having run on to a free ball into space, the goal is a testament to Gotze’s immense ball control and self-confidence.
4. Bayern Munich v Borussia Dortmund, 2012-13 Bundesliga
Up against their sworn rivals at the Allianz Arena, Gotze once again showed what he is made of as he finished with accuracy from a loose clearance off a corner to find the net despite a crowd of bodies in front of goal. The goal came at the end of a dominating Dortmund display with the ball in possession, a typical example of how Jurgen Klopp used to set them up.

3. Freiburg v Borussia Dortmund, 2011-12 Bundesliga
Up against Freiburg and away, Klopp’s team were finding it extremely difficult to break down the home team. But that was all before Dortmund’s wonder kid Gotze decided to go on a maze run past defenders to get into the box and get sight of goal. He finished with aplomb too, as a lunging defender had no chance of stopping the goal, which was rolled past the goalie sublimely.

2. Borussia Dortmund v Hamburg FC, 2012-13 Bundesliga
On a rainy night in Dortmund, Mario Gotze showed what he’s made of as visitors Hamburg were forced to watch a sublime piece of dribbling play and accurate finish fly past the goalkeeper into the net. The German showed amazing ball control skills and a will to get past defenders to finish with an accuracy that few can achieve at that age.
1.Germany v Argentina, 2014 FIFA World Cup Final
This has to Gotze’s best moment in his career as the Germans lifted their first World Cup since the turn of the century at the expense of Lionel Messi’s Argentina. With the Final into extra time, Gotze controlled a Andre Schurle pass wonderfully on his chest and shot past Sergio Romero to make it 1-0 for the Germans in the dying minutes of the game.
