The 2019 French Open was one of the most interesting and hard fought Grand Slam tournaments in recent times. There were some close matches and there were a few which proved to be nail biters. Lets’s take a look back at 3 best and most intensely fought matches of Roland Garros 2019.
3. Benoit Paire Vs Kei Nishikori
This might not have been the high profile contest to start with but it proved to be a thriller. Nishikori was the favorite at the start and it appeared normal when he took the 1st set. The Frenchman Paire however fought back hard and strong to win the closely contested tie-breaker in the 2nd set.
Nishikori again was dominant in the 3rd set taking it 6-1. The 4th however again went to the tie-breaker and Paire would again come out victorious taking the match to a final set. The 5th set remained closely contested and with the no final set tie-breaker rule at Roland Garros the match threatened to stretch long hours. However, serving at 6-5 Paire was broken and Nishikori would come out victorious in a match that was played for 2 days.
2. Tsitsipas Vs Wawrinka
This match was another clash of established stars vs the new guard trying to break though. Wawrinka a former champion and finalist at Roland Garros was coming of his own after an year derailed by injuries. Stefanos Tsitsipas, a young Greek who was getting better with everyday stood in the way. The clash was among one of the most awaited ones even in pre-tournament analysis.

The 1st set gave the indication of where the match could go. It was held tightly and went to the tie-breaker. Wawrinka etched out Tsitsipas by a narrow margin to take the initial lead. The talented Greek however was quick to recover and fought with same vigor in the 2nd set. He took it 7-5 and leveled the match.

The 3rd and the 4th sets were also exchanged between the two. The match would then go to a decider. With no tie-break rule in the final set at Roland Garros the match feared to stretch long. Both players would fight tooth and nail in the 5th set and none willing to give the other an inch. Eventually at 7-6, serving to stay in the set Tsitsipas had a moment of loss in concentration. Wawrinka ceased the opportunity and broke through to close out the match and 8-6 in the 5th set.
1. Thiem Vs Djokovic Semifinal
This contest was supposed to be the battle of the heavyweights and it perfectly lived up to its reputation. The 2018 finalist Thiem met 2016 champion Djokovic in the 2nd semifinal at Philippe Chatrier.
The 1st and 2nd sets were shared by the duo with comfortable wins over each other. What added further mystery to the match was sporadic rainfall which forced the umpires to call off play three times.
When the play was resumed on 2nd day Djokovic began to threaten by raising his game. However Thiem who is at home on clay bounced back to take the 3rd get at go 2-1 up in the match. The 4th set saw both the players raise their game further up. Novak’s experience came to the rescue and he held his nerve taking the set 7-5.
The match would go to a decider where no player was ready to give an inch. However, it was Djokovic who blinked 1st giving the break to and match to Thiem. At 6-5. The contest was hard fought for more than 4 hours and thus proved to be the best match of Roland Garros 2019.
