New Delhi: The iconic Sunil Gavaskar on Wednesday said that both Yuzvendra Chahal and Jasprit Bumrah should be given an opportunity to play Test cricket also after the duo played a crucial role in India’s six-run win over New Zealand in the T20I series decider in Rajkot on Tuesday.
While talking to NDTV, Gavaskar said, “They were fantastic (Jasprit Bumrah and Yuzvendra Chahal in final T20 International). They brought their Indian Premier League experience into play.”
India could only score 67 runs in their alloted eight overs in the rain-curtailed contest courtesy some tight bowling by the Kiwis but both Bumrah and Chahal bowled exceptionally well in the game to help India win the series.
He said, “Both of them (Jasprit Bumrah and Yuzvendra Chahal) should be considered for the Test matches too.”
This Virat Kohli led Indian team has been scaling new heights for quite some time now and Tuesday’s win over New Zealand helped them register their first ever series victory against the Kiwis. As a matter of fact, they had never beaten New Zealand in a T20I before the first match of the recently concluded series where they registered a huge victory over Kane Williamson’s side in Delhi.
The former Indian captain further said that this team has the capability of becoming the most dominant Indian team ever.
“It’s a significant series win considering our record against New Zealand till now and I believe that this team has got the potential to be the most dominant Indian cricket team ever,” he said.
After the 2nd T20I in Rajkot, MS Dhoni was once again at the receiving end of a lot of criticism due to him not being able to find the big shots. But Gavaskar feels that the veteran wicketkeeper batsman is still important to the team, which is evident from his mutually respectful relationship with skipper Virat Kohli.
“Virat (Kohli) has backed Dhoni completely and we can see that in crunch situations, he even allows Dhoni to set the field. This is a big vote of confidence and this is exactly what a player of Dhoni’s caliber deserves,” said Gavaskar.
