Sprint king Usain Bolt was surprisingly left out of the 10-men shortlist for this year’s IAAF world athlete of the year awards. The Jamaican has a record of winning the award six times in between 2008 and 2016.
The IAAF Athlete of the Year award is a prize given to the best athletes participating in the events of athletics organised by the International Athletics Foundation of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).

Considered to be the greatest sprinter of all time, Bolt is a 11 time World Champion and has consecutively won the 100m, 200m and the 4 × 100m relay gold medals in the World Championships from 2009 to 2015, with 2011 being an exception where he was disqualified from the 100m for a false start.
Bolt retired from the game earlier this year after the London Championships, holding a world record of 9.58 seconds in the 100m and 19.19 seconds in the 200m, he set in the year 2009.

Although his last race which was the 4 × 100m did not go according to the plan, where he pulled his hamstring in the Championships in London, prior to that he had earned a bronze medal in the 100m sprints.
He also holds the record of winning a gold medal in both the 100m and the 200m sprints in three consecutive Olympics (2008, 2012, 2016). He had won the 4 × 100m team relay also in all the three Olympics but unfortunately Jamaica was later disqualified from the relay 2008 Beijing Olympics gold after teammate Nesta Carter was caught in doping offenses.

In the women’s IAAF athlete of the year shortlist 2016 winner Ethiopian Almaz Ayana and 2011 winner Australian Sally Pearson were also included along with eight other names.
The IAAF announced on Monday that the finalists will be determined by a “three-way voting process.” It included 50 percent votes from the IAAF council, 25 percent from the IAAF member federations and committee members, and the remaining 25 percent from a public vote on social media sites, reported the Times Of India.

The men’s shortlisted names are: Mutaz Essa Barshim, Pawel Fajdek, Mo Farah, Sam Kendricks, Elijah Manangoi, Luvo Manyonga, Omar McLeod, Christian Taylor, Wayde van Niekerk and Johannes Vetter.
The women’s short listed names are: Almaz Ayana, Anita Wlodarczyk, Maria Lasitskene, Hellen Obiri, Sally Pearson, Sandra Perkovic, Brittney Reese, Caster Semenya, Ekaterini Stefanidi and Nafissatou Thiam.
The awards are set to be announced on Nov. 24.
