Lucknow: Young Prithvi Shaw was the star for India Red as he scored a wonderful 134 to help his team score 317/5 on the first day of the Duleep Trophy final against India Blue.
With this hundred, the 17-year-old Shaw became the youngest to score a hundred on Duleep Trophy debut thereby going past the legendary Sachin Tendulkar’s record. Shaw had made his Ranji Trophy debut for Mumbai earlier this year and now, he has become the second youngest from the city to have scored a century.
His brilliant form this helped Mumbai make it to the finals, handing a six-wicket defeat to Tamil Nadu. Sachin had tons to his name in all three tournaments- Ranji Trophy, Irani Trophy and the Duleep Trophy before he turned 18.
Shaw had earlier grabbed a lot of eyeballs after he slammed a mammoth 546 runs from just 330 balls in a Harris Shield match, playing for Rizvi Springfield school against St. Francis School. He hit a total of 85 fours and five sixes in the knock. Interestingly, this is the same tournament which had saw Sachin make a mark and gained the limelight more than twenty years ago.
Dinesh Karthik, the India Red skipper won the toss and decided to bat first and his decision paid off as Shaw along with fellow opener Akhil Herwadkar put on 74 runs before the latter was run out for 25.
But Shaw continued and was ably supported by skipper Karthik (111) with whom he stitched a 211-run partnership which tilted the game in their favour. But India Blue would be happy with Bhargav Bhatt, who scalped two late wickets to help India Blue remain in the game at the end of the first day’s play. Bhatt was the most successful bowler for Suresh Raina’s team as he had figures of 3/83 from 26.3 overs with a maiden.
