Indian performance on Day 1 of the 22nd Asian Athletics Championships brought great cheer to the fans with India winning seven medals including two gold.
Manpreet Kaur,the only Indian Woman Shot Putter to qualify for the Olympics, did her reputation no harm by winning a gold medal with a throw of 18.28m.

G Lakshmanan, won the 5000m event with a timing of 14:54.48 with Qatar and Saudi Arabia finishing in second and third place respectively.
In the women’s long jump category, Indian won two medals with Neena V winning a silver and Nayana James settling for the bronze. Bui Ti Thu from Vietnam won the gold medal with a jump of 6.54 m which was matched by Neena V as well. However the former won the gold as the jump was achieved in her first attempt while the latter did it in the fourth one.

Anu Rani also won bronze in the Women’s Javelin event with a throw of 57.32 m.
Four time Olympian, Vikas Gowda finished a disappointing 3rd in the Men’s Discus event and was well below his personal best.
Sanjeevani Jadhav gave India much to cheer by wining a bronze medal in the 5000m event with a timing of 16:00.24. Hailing from Nashik, she is one of India’s brightest young talents and is a long term prospect.
Sanjeevani had also finished a creditable 6th at the 2015 World University Games in South Korea and is targeting to win India’s first track medal at the World University Games this year.

Day 2 will have some exciting events in place, with three Indian’s in the Men’s 400 m finals. Jisna Mathew , M Poovama and Nirmala also qualified for the Women’s 400m finals. Dutee Chand will also be competing in Women’s 100 m semi finals.
