Kolkata: Kings XI Punjab and Sunrisers Hyderabad triumphed over the Delhi Daredevils and the Kolkata Knight Riders on a double header Sunday in the Indian Premier League.
In the first match in Mohali, Kings XI skipper Glenn Maxwell won the toss and chose to field first. This move paid dividends as the Delhi team led by stand-in skipper Karun Nair put on a dismal batting performance as they were bundled out for a paltry 67 with Sandeep Sharma being the wrecker-in-chief, snaring four wickets giving away just 20 runs in his four overs.
In reply, Punjab openers Hashim Amla (16*) and Martin Guptill (50*) batted out the total and ensured that their side record one of the most thumping wins in this year’s tournament.
David Warner on fire
In the second game, Sunrisers Hyderabad upstaged the Kolkata Knight Riders by 48 runs after Hyderabad skipper David Warner (126 off 59) set things up beautifully with a bludgeoning century. Hyderabad put 209 runs on the board but the Kolkata batsmen never really were in the chase after their openers- Gautam Gambhir (11) and Sunil Narine (1) were sent back into the hut quite early.
Robin Uthappa (53) looked threatening along with Manish Pandey (39) but as soon as both these batsmen were dismissed, the game was almost over as they finally ended up on 161/7, 48 runs short of Hyderabad.
With this win, Kings XI Punjab are at the fifth position with Delhi Daredevils at the bottom of the table. Kolkata Knight Riders, despite a loss remain at the top as Sunrisers Hyderabad topple Mumbai Indians to go to the second spot.
Brief scores:
Delhi Daredevils 67 all out in 17.1 overs (Karun Nair 11, Kagiso Rabada 11; Sandeep Sharma 4/20) lost to Kings XI Punjab 68 for no loss in 7.5 overs (Martin Guptill 50*, Hashim Amla 16*) by 10 wickets.
