Nothing tastes sweet as revenge, Andy Murray could not have asked for a better Birthday gift on his 29th birthday than an Italian Open Title and that to over World no 1 Novak Djokovic in straight sets. The victory over the Serb on Sunday avenges the defeat he had suffered in the last weeks Madrid Open finals and comes as a big plus for the Brit going into the second Grand slam of the season in a exactly a week’s time.
The match setting was quite gloomy, it has rained and the court was heavy but not for Andy Murray who was out there on a mission to put an end to all the talk that has been happening over the past weeks regarding his separation with his coach and his inability to come good against the World No. 1.n the other hand, Djokovic was cut to a sore figure who argued rightly though and even Murray acknowledged with the Chair Umpire throughout the one hour 35 minute match for as per him the surface was not playable and there were high chances of someone getting hurt but the Argentinian Umpire was unmoved.
Djokovic came into the match after 2 hard fought wins; over Rafael Nadal in the 3rd round and a three hour encounter against Japan’s Kei Nishikori and to make matters worse he had a bandaged left ankle after he had comically hit himself with his racket in an attempt to loosen the dirt from his shoes.
This match was simple affair with Murray’s service remaining unchallenged and he went entire week without a break of serve. The final was won in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 with Djokovic’s service game and returns put under pressure and they failed to live up. The victory was only his second in 14 matches since Wimbledon 2013
For Murray it could well be jubilation for once upon a time, the clay was his staunch enemy but now he has finally managed to capture the monster in his head and by winning at Rome Masters he got into the history books being the First British player after George Patrick Hughes since 1931 to take home the title. But his victory over the Serb though valiant must be taken with a pinch of salt as Djokovic was not at his A-game, he had a sore left ankle which obstructed his free movement on the court and the weather conditions only made the matters worse. How much will Murray be able to challenge a fit Djokovic is still to be seen, a possible French Open Final meeting cannot be ruled out either.
