Tokyo: In a recognition event to encourage the sportspersons of their country, an enthusiastic crowd of around 800,000 gathered to welcome their heroes in downtown Tokyo today.
The event was organized to welcome home 87 Japanese Olympian and Paralympian medallists from the Rio 2016 Games. As the buses carrying the athletes came in view, the crowds roared their appreciation as the Olympic and Paralympic heroes paraded in open-top buses through the city centre, waving to their fans and thanking them for their strong support.
The parade which covered the distance of 2.5 kilometres from the Ginza district, the buses travelled through Tokyo’s world-famous shopping and dining area featuring trendy boutiques and world-class restaurants, to the traditional Nihonbashi district, the historical centre of Tokyo, with its fascinating mix of centuries-old establishments and cultural landmarks.
In what could be seen as one of the most touching moments of sportspersons and fans, the emotional reunion created unforgettable scenes in a city that growing more excited by the day about its hosting of the next summer Olympic and Paralympic Games.
