Henin was the favorite to lift the Roland Garros trophy for the 5th time in 2008. However, she surprised many by retiring from tennis few weeks before the French Open was to start that year.

Henin did comeback in 2010 after a 16 month retirement period. That year she reached the Australian Open final and aimed to win her 5th title in Paris.
Although she made steady progress till the 4th round, even defeating the then World Number 1 Maria Sharapova but she went down in the 4th round never to return to Paris again.

Steffi won a total of 22 Slams in total 6 of whom came from the red dirt at Paris. She reached a total of 9 French Finals finishing a runner up on 3 occasions.

Steffi’s 1st French Open win came against Martina Navratilova in 1987. Twelve years later she won her 4th and final Roland Garros against Swiss Star Martina Hingis. Two of her 3 defeats at Roland Garros came against her great rival Monica Seles and 1 against Spain’s Arantxa Sanchez

The Steffi-Monica rivalry reached its highest summit in the great final of 1992 Roland Garros. The 3rd and final set was decided 10-8 in Seles’s favor but Steffi knew she had lost to a better player on that day.
Had the Seles stabbing episode not occurred, the tennis world could have seen more of Steffi-Monica slugfest in Paris.

We all fell in love with little Miss America when in 1973 aged just 18 she reached her 1st French final. It was the start of a decade and a half long mutual love affair where Evert would go on to reach 9 French finals and win 7 of them.
Evert could have won more French titles had she not opted out of the tournament for 3 years from 1976 to 1978, which were her prime years on the tour.

She holds the record of 125 consecutive match wins on clay, a feat that even Rafa Nadal could never equal.
The last of Evert’s Roland Garros titles came in 1986 at the age of 31. She competed in 13 French Opens and managed to reach the semifinal in 12 of them, a remarkable display of her supreme consistency on the surface.
