Today we bring you the WTA Singles’ Oldest Australian Open Champions. Much like their male counterparts, the WTA players fight hard for the Australian Open title. The Australian Open women’s trophy is named after the legendary Australian tennis player Daphne Akhurst, who won the championship 5 times in the 1920s. In this article we take a look at 5 Oldest Australian Open Champions in Women’s Singles since the start of the Open Era in 1969.
5. Caroline Wozniacki
The Danish tennis star has reached the career high ranking of World Number 1 in singles career. However, Caroline who reached a singles Grand Slam final three times in her career has had success only once. That sole success would come on the hard courts of Melbourne in 2018. Seeded second in the tournament, Caroline beat Romania’s Simona Halep who was the top seed in 3 sets to clinch her 1st and only Grand Slam victory till date.
Caroline was aged 27 years and 200 days then. This made her one of the oldest female players to win the Australian Open singles trophy in the Open Era. The Danish player has announced her career retirement from tennis and Australian Open 2020 would be her last professional event. We congratulate her for a remarkable career and wish her the best of post tennis life. Thus, among the Oldest Australian Open Champions.
4. Angelique Kerber
One of the best tennis players Germany produced in the last 20 years. Kerber has won 3 Grand Slam titles in her career. She has won 1 slam on each of the venues except the clay of Roland Garros. Angie’s 1st Grand Slam success came in the 2016 Australian Open. She beat top seed and then 6 time champion Serena Williams in the dramatic final.
Kerber is seeded 17 in this year’s draw. The former World Number 1 may be struggling a bit with the form but she definitely has the class and experience to go deep in the tournament and hopefully repeat the 2016 success. Thus, among the Oldest Australian Open Champions.
