Lord’s Test, 2014
In 2014, the MS Dhoni led Indian Cricket team played a match that got added among the top 5 India England test matches. India were touring England for 5 Test matches, 5 ODIs and a T20 International match. The test series was sponsored by Investec, hence got the name Investec test series. In the second test at Lord’s, Alastair Cook won the toss and put India into bat first. India were bowled out for 295 in their first innings despite a fighting 103 from Ajinkya Rahane who was the 9th wicket. Anderson took 4 while Stokes & Broad took 2 each.
England, in reply, couldn’t get a big lead and were bowled out for 319 despite 110 from Gary Ballance & 55 not out from Liam Plunkett. Bhuvneshwar Kumar scalped 6 while Ravindra Jadeja took 2. India were behind by 24 runs when they came into bat for the second time in this test. They scored 342 with 95 from Murali Vijay, 68 from Ravindra Jadeja and 52 from Bhuvneshwar Kumar to set a target of 319 runs for the English team. Ishant Sharma, who went wicketless in the first innings, picked wickets with both hands to dismiss the English team for 223 with Ishant taking 7/74. He was declared man of the match as this match got added among the top 5 India England test matches.
Chennai Test, 2008
In 2014, the Kevin Pietersen led England Cricket team played a match that got added among the top 5 India England test matches. England were touring India for 7 ODIs and 2 Test matches. In the first test at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Pietersen won the toss and elected to bat first. They were bowled out for 316 in their first innings with 123 from Andrew Strauss, Alastair Cook’s 52 & Matt Prior‘s 53 not out. Zaheer Khan took 2 while Harbhajan Singh & Amit Mishra took 3 each. India, in reply, couldn’t get going and were bowled out for 241 with Dhoni’s 53 & Bhajji’s 40. Andrew Flintoff & Monty Panesar took 3 each while Graeme Swann took 2.
When England came into bat for their second innings, they had a first innings lead of 75 runs and they scored 311/9 before declaring it for India with Andrew Strauss scoring his second hundred (108) of the match while Paul Collingwood also scoring 108. Set a target of 387 in their fourth innings, India came into bat with both the Indian Openers Sehwag & Gambhir striking the ball well. They added 117 for the first wicket before Sehwag fell lbw to Swann after a blistering 83 off 68 balls.
Rahul Dravid fell cheaply adding pressure on Gambhir who was next to fall after a 139 ball 66. But Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar made sure that these falling wickets wouldn’t hurt India’s chances in the match and added 41 runs with VVS Laxman (26) and an unbeaten partnership of 163 with Yuvraj Singh (85 not out). Sachin scored 103 not out. Sehwag was declared man of the match as this match got added among the top 5 India England test matches.
Nottingham Test, 2007
In 2007, the Rahul Dravid led Indian Cricket team played a match that got added among the top 5 India England test matches. India were touring England & Scotland for 3 Test matches & 7 ODIs against England and an ODI against Scotland. In the second test at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, Rahul Dravid won the toss and put England into bat first. England were bowled out for 198 in their first innings with Alastair Cook topscoring for them with 43. Zaheer Khan took 4 while Anil Kumble took 3 wickets. India, in reply, scored 481 with Sachin Tendulkar’s 91, Sourav Ganguly’s 79, Dinesh Karthik‘s 77, Wasim Jaffer‘s 62 & VVS Laxman‘s 54. Monty Panesar scalped 4 while Chris Tremlett took 3.
England were behind by 283 runs when they came into bat for the second time in this test. They scored 355 with 124 from Captain Michael Vaughan, 63 from Paul Collingwood and 55 from Andrew Strauss to set a target of 73 runs for the touring team. Zaheer Khan picked 5 while Anil Kumble picked 3 wickets. India chased down the low target with 7 wickets remaining, Zaheer was declared man of the match for his 9 wicket haul in the test as this match got added among the top 5 India England test matches.
Leeds Test, 2002
In 2002, another test match got added in the top 5 India England test matches when the Sourav Ganguly led Indian Cricket team toured England for 4 Test matches & ODI Tri series (featuring Sri Lanka as the third team). In the third test at Headingley, Leeds, Ganguly won the toss and elected to bat first. India scored a mammoth 628/8 in their first innings when they declared it; Sachin Tendulkar scored 193, Rahul Dravid (148) & Sourav Ganguly (128) were other top contributors. Andy Caddick took 3 while Alex Tudor took 2 wickets.
England, in reply, were bowled out for 273 despite 78 not out from Alec Stewart. Anil Kumble & Harbhajan Singh scalped 3 each while remaining 4 wickets were equally shared between Zaheer Khan and Ajit Agarkar. Following on England were behind by 355 runs when they came into bat for the second time in this test. They scored 309 despite a heroic 110 from captain Nasser Hussain. Anil Kumble took 4 while Bangar took 2 wickets. Rahul Dravid was declared man of the match as this match got added among the top 5 India England test matches.
Kolkata Test, 1993
In 1993, the Graham Gooch led England Cricket team toured India for 3 Test matches & 7 ODIs. In the first test at Eden Gardens, Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin won the toss and elected to bat first. India were bowled out for 371 in their first innings despite a fighting 182 from Skipper and 50 from Sachin Tendulkar. Devon Malcolm & Graeme Hick took 3 wickets each while Paul Jarvis scalped 2 Indian batsmen. England, in reply, couldn’t face Indian spin trio of Anil Kumble, Rajesh Chauhan & Venkatapathy Raju who picked 3 wickets each to limit the visitors for a paltry 163.
They put the opponents to follow on with 208 runs still to chase for the visiting team. England made 286 from their second innings with Mike Gatting (81) & Alec Stewart (49) doing major part of their scoring leaving India to chase a target of 79 in their fourth innings. Kumble & Raju picked 3 wickets each while Kapil & Chauhan picked 2 apiece from the England innings. India chased down the target with 8 wickets remaining. Skipper Mohammad Azharuddin was declared man of the match as this match got added among the top 5 India England test matches.
