Mumbai: The BCCI on Friday appointed Sunil Subramaniam as the administrative manager for Team India for a one-year tenure.
He would thus join Virat Kohli and co ahead of the second Test in Colombo which would begin on August 3.
A BCCI statement said, “The Board of Control for Cricket in India on Friday appointed former First Class cricketer Mr. Sunil Subramanian as the Administrative Manager of Team India (Senior Men).”
It also added, “He will be contracted for a one-year term and will join Team India in Sri Lanka before the start of second Test.”
Subramaniam, a former left-arm spinner has played for Tamil Nadu and Assam and has 285 scalps to his name besides having scored 1096 runs.
The Indian board however did not appoint managers for the India U-19 and the India A teams, atleast for the time being. At one point of time Arman Malik was said to be in the running to be appointed India A manager and the choice for India U-19 manager was between Prakash Bhatt and Shankar Saini.
However, Malik does not qualify as he does not have a single first class match against his name. Later it was decided that since India A and U-19 teams do not have as many series as the senior team, there is no need to appoint a full time manager. BCCI can depute somebody from its administration to perform the duty as and when required,” said a BCCI official to the PTI.
Subramaniam is the man behind Ravichandran Ashwin’s bowling exploits as he coached the Tamil Nadu lad from his childhood and taught him the tactics and strategies involved in off-spin bowling.
Subramaniam has also been the captain of Tamil Nadu in the past and is a certified coach under the National Cricket Academy (NCA). “He also has a rich vein of experience when it comes to management and administrative capabilities having served both public and private sector organisations for over 16 years,” said a BCCI statement.
