Mumbai: Prodigious batsman Prithvi Shaw once again proved as to why he is one of the upcoming stars in Indian cricket as he smashed a century against Tamil Nadu to take Mumbai to a a decent 314/7 at the end of the first day’s play in Mumbai on Tuesday.
Batting first, the hosts lost opener Akhil Herwadkar for only eight runs early on in the innings. But a 98-run stand between Shaw and Shreyas Iyer (57) made sure that there were no more jitters before the latter fell to all-rounder Vijay Shankar. Suryakumar Yadav then played a brief 39-run innings and there was also a late contribution of 53 runs from skipper Aditya Tare ensured that things were well within control.
In all of this, the young Shaw continued to impress everyone with his performances. The 17-year-old now has three First Class hundreds to his name before reaching eighteen years of age- just an example of the volume of talent he possesses. He led the charge with a valiant 123 of 155 balls with 17 fours and two sixes and gave Mumbai the edge at the end of the first day.
For Tamil Nadu, Yo Mahesh landed crucial blows as he sent back Herwadkar and Suryakumar Yadav while the most successful bowler was Vijay Shankar who scalped three wickets-conceding just 37 runs. Ravichandran Ashwin also took two wickets.
