Profile | Vijay Amritraj is an Indian former tennis player, who has represented India international from 1970 to 1987. He is a sports commentator and works as an actor in some Hollywood films as well. He is one of the earliest professional tennis players of this country considered one of the greatest sportsmen of all-time. He was born in Chennai and shown his keen on tennis since his childhood. His two brother Anand and Ashok Amritraj are also two international tennis players. He used to play for the state-level tournaments at the beginning of his career and won a few significant national-level titles before turning professional. He made his international debut in 1970 with the Grand Prix championship and couldn’t make his impression with his first attempt. Amritraj made his mark perfectly at the international field with his performance in 1973 Grand Slam tournament. After this, his wining trail began successfully and he soon became a part of the Indian Davis Cup team since 1974. He has played almost 680 matches among them, he won for 384 times. He clinched 16 singles and 13 doubles titles in his about two-decade-long career span and made himself one of the most successful tennis stars in the history of this sport. He is socially a very active person and has been raising the sensitive health awareness around the world including HIV and Drug issues.
