Profile | Pete Sampras is a former professional tennis player from USA. Pistol Pete as he was famously known was regarded as the game’s Greatest player when he retired in 2002. He held most tennis record to his name then. Today Sampras has most of his records being improved by the BIG 3. He had a game perfectly suited to the quick grass courts of 1990s. His amazing serve and volley skills along with strong movement made him one of the best players on grass of Wimbledon. Sampras won 14 Grand Slams in total and 7 of them came on the Centre Court of SW19. He held the record for most Wimbledon trophies till it was broken by Roger Federer in 2017. At his Prime on Grass Sampras was regarded as unbeatable. However, the 1 record that he still holds in the most year-end World Number 1 finishes. Sampras ended 6 years as World Number 1, a record that still stands. What is more astounding is the fact that the American spent those 6 years in succession from 1993 to 1998, a rare feat. In his amazing career, Sampras won 43 Million US $. This was also the record at the time Pistol Pete hung his racket in 2002. (As written by Amir Rashid in the articles here) |
