David Goffin had been the best male tennis player to come from Belgium. He is the only Belgian to enter the top 10. On his Birthday, we rewind to the career best week for the Belgian star which came at the Nitto ATP finals in London in 2017, where he finished as the finalist.
Goffin rose to a career high ranking of World Number 7 in 2017 and had his maiden shot at the O2 arena. In his 1st match the aggressive Belgian defeated the then World Number 1 Rafa Nadal in 3 sets. He would the defeat Austria’s Dominic Thiem in another Round Robin match to book his spot in the semi-finals.
In the semis Goffin met the 6 time Champion Roger Federer. The Belgian looked near to the exit route after he lost the 1st set to this Swiss. However, Goffin was not to go down without a fight. He too the 2nd set to level the match. Goffin left the O2 arena stunned after breaking Federer in the 3rd set and then clinching the semi-final and booking his place in the final.
In the final however, Goffin lost to Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov. The Belgian here also fought tooth and nail after losing the 1st set. He took the match to a decider but ultimately lost the 3rd set and the championship.
David Goffin came very near to his biggest career title 2 years ago.
