Profile | Andrea Pirlo is the midfield maestro that the World never saw enough of. The man represented the biggest clubs in Italy including AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juve, is a World Cup winner of his own accord and one of the very best in his position across generations. Pirlo started off his club career with boyhood and hometown club Brescia, which rode on his brilliance to get a taste of Serie A from Serie B. He was sold to Inter on the back of promising performances and two loan spells later, he switched to cross town club, AC Milan. It is at Milan that Pirlo was deployed by Carlo Ancelloti in a deep midfield role, playing as an auxiliary No.6. Pirlo excelled in the new role with aplomb as he sat deep, masterminded attacks and made Milan one of the best teams in Europe. He won everything with the Rossoneri, the Champions League, the Serie A and the Supercopa Italiana. He represented Italy first in 2002 and then went on to be a key figure in their World Cup triumph in 2006. He was outstanding in the Final against France and was named as the best midfielder in the tournament. Pirlo joined powerhouse Juventus in Turin in 2011 and turned them into title contenders straight away. The Serie A Midfielder of the Year 2012, 2013 and 2014 won consecutive Scudettos with the Old Lady as he started achieving legendary status from fans and pundits alike. Adept at taking free kicks and building attacks, Pirlo shone for New York City as well when he switched to MLS at the twilight of his career. Andrea Pirlo has had a fulfilling an rewarding career that has seen him win anything he’s put his focus on. He is known for his ball control, vision, incisive passing and building attacks. He was one of the best free kick and corner takers of his day and a lot of his goals have come from a dead ball condition. Alongside Xavi, Iniesta and Vierra, Pirlo stands out to be one of the best midfielders in the 21st century. (As written by Priyansu) |
