Nagpur: Indian captain Virat Kohli has been rested for the ODI series against Sri Lanka and vice-captain Rohit Sharma has been handed the responsibility of leading the team, in the three-match series beginning from December 10.
Sharma struck a stylish hundred against Sri Lanka in the recently concluded Test match against Sri Lanka in Nagpur and now, he has been named the captain of the ODI side in the absence of Kohli.
Also Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja continue to be overlooked for the scheme of things in the 50-over format. They haven’t been a part of India’s limited over teams for a long time, since the away series against Sri Lanka earlier this year.
Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav, both of whom have had a lot of success in the limited overs’ format of late continues to be selected as the frontline spinners of the Indian ODI side. Axar Patel too, has been included in the squad.
On the other hand, Mumbai batsman Shreyas Iyer, who made his international debut in the T20I series against New Zealand has been named in the squad and would expectedly bat at the number three position. Punjab’s right-arm pacer Siddharth Kaul, who was a part of Kohli’s U-19 World Cup winning team in 2008 has been given a national call-up.
Kaul has played 50 first class games where he has taken 175 wickets. He also has 98 wickets from 52 List A matches and has also represented India A.
Former skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, all-rounder Hardik Pandya, Kedar Jadhav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah who are regulars in the format have also been included.
The squad for the third Test, scheduled to be played in Delhi, beginning on December 2 remains unchanged.
