The Asia Cup was played during December 25, 1990- January 4, 1991 in India, with three teams participating, teams were in one group and round robin matches would decide the top 2 who would go on to play the the tournament final. India & Sri Lanka played the tournament final with India winning their third Asia Cup title. Sri Lankan Captain Arjuna Ranatunga led the batting cards of the tournament edition. 5. Arjuna Ranatunga (Sri Lanka)
The Sri Lankan Captain would pick 2 wickets from the three matches he played in the ACC Asia Cup 1990-91 at an average of 24. With these wickets, Ranatunga featured in the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 1990-91. His best was 1/12 against India on January 4, 1991 in the tournament final at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Sri Lanka had batted first and scored 204/9 with Arjuna Ranatunga’s 49. India won the match by 7 wickets; Sanjay Manjrekar scored 75 not out, Sachin Tendulkar scored 53 while Mohammad Azharuddin scored quickfire 54 not out.
Apart from Arjuna Ranatunga, Don Anurasiri, Saradindu Mukherjee, Manoj Prabhakar & Venkatapathy Raju took two wickets each in the tournament.
4. Sanath Jayasuriya (Sri Lanka)
The Sri Lankan Left arm spinner would go on to pick 3 wickets from the three matches he played in the ACC Asia Cup 1990-91 at an average of 30.33. With these wickets, Jayasuriya featured in the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 1990-91. His best was 2/39 against Bangladesh in the 3rd Match of the tournament. Sri Lanka had batted first and scored 249/4 with Aravinda de Silva‘s 89 & Arjuna Ranatunga’s 64 not out. Bangladesh, in reply, could reach only 178/9. Sanath was the top wicket taker for Sri Lanka with 2 dismissals.
3. Rumesh Ratnayake (Sri Lanka)
The Sri Lankan Medium Pace bowler would go on to take 4 wickets from the two matches he played at an outstanding average of 14.50. With these wickets, Rumesh Joseph Ratnayake featured in the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 1990-91. His best was 3/24 against India on December 28, 1990, in the 2nd Match of the tournament at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack. Batting first, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 214 despite Arjuna Ranatunga’s 53. Kapil Dev & Atul Wassan took 3 wickets each. India were bowled out for 178 despite Mohammad Azharuddin‘s 40 handing Sri Lanka a 36 runs win with Rumesh Ratnayake 3 for.
2. Atul Wassan (India)
The Indian medium pace bowler Atul Satish Wassan would pick 5 wickets from the three matches he played in the ACC Asia Cup 1990-91 at an average of 20.80. With these wickets, Wassan featured in the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 1990-91. His best was 3/28 against Sri Lanka in a losing cause as Indians couldn’t chase a 215 set by the Sri Lanka team.
1. Kapil Dev (India)
The Indian Legend would pick 9 wickets from the three matches he played in the ACC Asia Cup 1990-91 at an average of 10.66 & strike rate of 17.5, i.e. most wickets at the best average & strike rate in the tournament. With these wickets, Kapil Dev Ramlal Nikhanj led the top 5 list of the most wickets in Asia Cup 1990-91. His best was 4/31 against Sri Lanka in the tournament final. India won the match by 7 wickets to claim their third Asia Cup title.
Only one bowler took 4-wickets haul while three bowlers took 3-wickets haul in the tournament.
