Today we bring you the Cricketers who scored the most runs in Champions Trophy 2004. The 2004 ICC KnockOut Trophy was played during September 10- 25, 2004; 15 matches were played in the tournament. This was the third edition of the ‘mini’ Cricket World Cup run by ICC and the edition was hosted by Sri Lanka. Twelve teams were part of the 2004 ICC KnockOut Trophy viz. India, Pakistan, South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia, West Indies, Kenya, United States, Bangladesh & Sri Lanka. England & West Indies played the tournament final and West Indies won their first Champions Trophy title. Andrew Flintoff led the wickets table. Here we discuss the batsmen who hit the most runs in Champions Trophy 2004.

5. Chris Gayle (West Indies)

West Indies Explosive left hander Chris Henry Gayle scored 139 runs from the four matches he played in the tournament with an average of 34.75 and best score of 99 coming against Bangladesh on September 15. With these runs, Gayle featured into the top 5 list of most runs in Champions Trophy 2004. Batting first in the match of his highest score, West Indies made 269/3 with his 99 & Wavell Hinds’ 82. Tapash Baisya took 2 wickets. Bangladesh, in reply, were bowled out for 131. Mervyn Dillon (5) & Chris Gayle (2) were the key wicket takers.

4. Paul Collingwood (England)

England All-rounder Paul David Collingwood scored 141 runs from the four matches he played in the tournament with an average of 70.50 and best score of 80 not out coming against Zimbabwe on September 10. With this run aggregate, Collingwood featured into the top 5 list of most runs in Champions Trophy 2004. England had batted first and scored 299/7 with Collingwood’s score and Vikram Solanki’s 62. Douglas Hondo & Ed Rainsford took 2 wickets each. Zimbabwe, in reply, were bowled out for 147 despite Elton Chigumbura’s 42 not out & Tatenda Taibu’s 40. Steve Harmison & Andrew Flintoff took 3 wickets each while Darren Gough & Ashley Giles picked 2 wickets each.

3. Nathan Astle (New Zealand)

New Zealand batsman Nathan John Astle scored 163 runs from the three matches he played in the tournament with an outstanding average of 163 and best score of 145 not out coming against minnows USA on September 10 in the second match of the tournament. This was the highest score of the tournament edition. With this run aggregate, Astle featured into the top 5 list of most runs in Champions Trophy 2004. In his highest score innings match, New Zealand had batted first and scored 347/4 with Astle’s score and 75 from Scott Styris. Richard Staple took 2 wickets. In reply, USA were bowled out for 137 despite Clayton Lambert’s 39. Jacob Oram took 5 while Daniel Vettori took 3 wickets.

2. Ramnaresh Sarwan (West Indies)

West Indies batsman Ramnaresh Ronnie Sarwan would score 166 runs from the four matches he played in the tournament with an average of 83 and best score of 75 not out coming against South Africa on September 18. With this run aggregate, Sarwan featured in the top 5 list of most runs in Champions Trophy 2004. South Africa had batted first in his best score match and scored 246/6 with Herschelle Gibbs‘ 101, Jacques Rudolph’s 46 & Captain Graeme Smith’s 45. Chris Gayle took 3 wickets while Ian Bradshaw took 2. West Indies chased down the target and won by 5 wickets with Sarwan’s score, Brian Lara’s 49 & Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s 51 not out. Shaun Pollock & Makhaya Ntini took two wickets each.

1. Marcus Trescothick (England)

England Opening Batsman Marcus Edward Trescothick scored 261 runs from the four matches he played in the tournament with an average of 65.25 and best score of 104 coming against West Indies on September 25 in the tournament final. His runs would have a hundred & two fifties at a strike rate of 80, as he scored the most runs in Champions Trophy 2004. In the tournament final, England had batted first and were bowled out for 217 despite his hundred. Wavell Hinds took 3 while Ian Bradshaw took 2. West Indies chased down the target and won by 2 wickets with Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s 47 and tail-enders Courtney Browne & Ian Bradshaw finishing off the chase with 35 & 34 not out respectively.

These were the top scorers in the second edition of the ICC Champions Trophy, in 2004, the ones who made to the top 5 list of most runs in Champions Trophy 2004. It was a KnockOut tournament with 12 teams participating divided into 4 groups and table toppers team of each group would progress to the semifinals and then the winning 2 would go to tournament final to fight out for the trophy.
