Today we bring you the Cricketers who scored the most runs in Asia Cup 1990-91. The Asia Cup was played during December 25, 1990- January 4, 1991; 4 matches were played in the tournament. This was the fourth edition of the continental cricket tournament run by Asian Cricket Council and the edition was hosted by India. Three teams were part of the Asia Cup 1990-91 viz. India, Bangladesh & Sri Lanka. India won their 3rd title at the tournament & Kapil Dev led the wickets table. Here we discuss the batsmen who hit the most runs in Asia Cup 1990-91.
5. Sanjay Manjrekar (India)
Indian Batsman Sanjay Manjrekar scored 112 runs from the three matches he played in the tournament with an average of 112 and best score of 75 not out coming against Sri Lanka on January 4, 1991 at Eden Gardens, Calcutta, in the tournament final. His runs would include one half-century, his best one and with this run aggregate, Manjrekar featured among the top 5 list of most runs in Asia Cup 1990-91. In his best individual score innings’ match, Sri Lanka had batted first and they scored 204/9 from 45 overs with Arjuna Ranatunga’s 49. Kapil Dev took 4 wickets while Atul Wassan & Saradindu Mukherjee took a wicket each. India chased down the target in the 43rd over with 7 wickets remaining with Manjrekar’s innings, Sachin Tendulkar’s 53 & Mohammad Azharuddin’s 54 not out.
4. Athar Ali Khan (Bangladesh)
Bangladesh Cricketer Athar Ali Khan scored 122 runs from the four matches he played in the tournament with an outstanding average of 122 and best score of 78 not out coming against Sri Lanka on December 31, 1990. With this run aggregate, Khan featured into the top 5 list of most runs in Asia Cup 1990-91. This was the best average by any batsman in the tournament. In his highest score innings match, Sri Lanka had batted first and scored 249/4 from 45 overs with Aravinda de Silva’s 89 & Arjuna Ranatunga’s 64. Bangladesh, in reply, couldn’t reach anywhere close to the target despite Khan’s 78 not out.
3. Aravinda de Silva (Sri Lanka)
Sri Lanka’s middle order batsman Aravinda de Silva scored 126 runs from the three matches he played in the tournament with an average of 42 and best score of 89 coming against Bangladesh in the same match that had Athar Ali Khan scored his highest of the tournament. With this run aggregate, D’Silva featured into the top 5 list of most runs in Asia Cup 1990-91. This was the only fifty D’Silva scored in the tournament.
2. Navjot Sidhu (India)
Indian opener Navjot Singh Sidhu scored 144 runs from the three matches he played in the tournament with an average of 72 and best score of 104 not out coming against Bangladesh on December 25, 1990. With this run aggregate, Navjot Sidhu featured into the top 5 list of most runs in Asia Cup 1990-91. His runs would include a hundred, the only hundred scored in the tournament by any batsman. In his best score innings, Bangladesh had batted first and scored 170/6 from their overs with Faruque Ahmed’s 57 & Athar Ali Khan’s 44. Kapil Dev & Venkatapathy Raju took 2 wickets each. India chased down the target with 13 plus overs remaining. WV Raman scored 44 apart from Navjot Sidhu’s score.
1. Arjuna Ranatunga (Sri Lanka)
Sri Lankan Captain & Middle order Batsman Arjuna Ranatunga scored 166 runs from the three matches he played in the tournament with an average of 83 and best score of 64 not out coming against Bangladesh in the same match that Athar Ali Khan & Aravinda de Silva both scored their highest scores of the tournament. With this run aggregate, Arjuna Ranatunga led the top 5 list of most runs in Asia Cup 1990-91. His runs would include two fifties, the only batsman to do so in the tournament.
These were the top scorers in the 4th edition of the Asia Cup, in 1990-91. It was a round robin format tournament at group stage with the three teams playing against one another and then the top 2 would go to tournament final to fight out for the trophy.
