Kolkata: Boxing legend Mike Tyson was barred from entering Chile for his past criminal records. The 51-year-old former heavyweight champion was stopped by the immigration police at the Santiago international airport on Thursday and was later pictured being escorted away by two officers who ‘re-imbarked’ him back to the USA.
‘Kid Dynamite’ had stepped into Chile, inorder to attend an awards ceremony for action films taking place at the country capital, Santiago. But was sent back home for reportedly not non -complying with the country’s immigration laws.
“Detectives from the International Police are re-boarding Mike Tyson for not complying with immigration law,” said an immigration officer as quoted by The Sun.
The officer also added that the immigration force has the power to “prohibit the entry into the country of any foreigner who has negative records and/or convictions in their country of origin,” he added.
The youngest heavyweights champion, in 1992 was convicted of the rape of teenaged beauty pageant contestant Desiree Washington, in his hotel room in Indianapolis, Indiana and was sentenced to six years in prison, but was released on parole after serving three years. However, in 1999 was once again imprisoned for 60 days after he was found guilty of violating the terms of the parole of his rape convuction. Tyson also has accusations for assault and cocaine possession. Most recently in 2007, Tyson pleaded guilty to drug possession and driving under the influence of drugs in Arizona.
However, this is not the first time that his erratic past has haunted him.
In 2013, Tyson was forced to scrap promotional appearances in London because the convictions against him barred him from entering Britain.
Similarly In 2012, New Zealand revoked an entry visa for Tyson after the charity that had invited him dropped its support due to his rape conviction and imprisonment.
