Sofia: The Indian women continued to fetch laurels to the country as they bagged five more medals including a gold at the ‘Balkan’ International Boxing Championship.
On Saturday, the youth boxers had hit the ground running by clinching a total of eight medals to make India the most successful team in the competition.
The young women, who were hand-picked for this prestigious tournament with the bigger picture of the Amateur Asian Boxing Championship next year in mind, impressed everyone with their performances including Boxing Federation of India (BFI) president Ajay Singh who said, “It was a matter of great pride that the youth women’s team clinched eight medals. But the elite category women too showed their progress by bagging five medals.”
Lalfakmawii Ralte was the star performer for India on Sunday as she defeated Ukraine’s Iryna by a 5-0 margin to bag the gold medal in the +81 kg category.
Pwilao Basumatary also performed well for India as she won the silver medal after going down to E Helena of Hungary in the 57 kg category.
Nirmala Rawat, Jyoti Singh (64 kgs) and MK Devi Maisnam (54 kgs) lost their semi-final matches to settle for bronze medals.
