India furthered their medal tally with the brightest medal, today, when Indian Weightlifter and Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Gold medalist in 48 kg, Khumukcham Sanjita Chanu won her second Commonwealth Games gold medal, albeit in 53 kg weight category.
Her win got the social media rolling with congratulatory messages from people from different aspects of life. Writing about the gold medal winner, former cricketer Mr. Virender Sehwag tweeted, “Bhartiya Naari Sab par Bhaari. One more Gold. Congratulations #SanjitaChanu for winning our second gold in #GC2018Weightlifting in the women’s 53kg category. #CWG2018 Her second CWG gold after the 48kg one in Glasgow. Proud of you champion.”
Olympic Silver Medalist Shooter & Indian Sports Minister, Mr. Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore tweeted, “Twice is always a charm! What a great start to this morning. Congratulations Khumukcham Sanjita Chanu on keeping up your excellent track record of being a?winner at #CWG! After a Gold in Glasgow in 2014, a Gold in weightlifting at #CWG2018 as well! Very proud! #SanjitaChanu”
Earlier, Sanjita Chanu won the second gold medal for India as she lifted 192 kg in total, 84 kg in Snatch and 108 kg in Clean and Jerk in the 53 kg weight category of Weightlifting (women) at Gold Coast. Loa Dika Toua of Papua New Guinea won Silver with 182 kg while New Zealand’s Rachel Leblanc-Bazinet took bronze with 181 kg.
With this, India is lying on the third pedal of the Medal table with England leading with 6 Gold medals, 3 Silver Medals & 3 Bronze Medals. On the second pedal is Australia with 5 Golds, 4 Silver & 6 Bronze. India have 2 golds and one Silver so far, followed by Malaysia with 2 Golds at the 4th pedal. Sanjita Chanu’s medal was India’s third medal overall at the ongoing Commonwealth games in Australia. Before that, Mirabai Chanu & P Gururaja won gold & silver, respectively on the opening day of the event.
