The India-Australia test series was renamed as the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in 1996-97. The inaugural edition had just one test match, played at Feroz Shah Kotla Ground (now Arun Jaitley Stadium), Delhi. India won the test and hence became the first holders of Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
