Today we discuss the top 5 male contenders for French Open 2020. Tennis is now looking past the Coronavirus with the ATP and WTA tours slowly but surely resuming to full schedule. Although held in May-June in a conventional season, the French Open this year is being played in September-October as a result of the Coronavirus impacted tour suspension.
There is however plenty to cheer about for the next 2 weeks. With new balls and a renovated Philippe Chatrier court we may also see a few surprise results in the tournament. Here is the list of the top 5 male contenders for French Open 2020, the 2020 Roland Garros Championship.
5. Daniil Medvedev
It might sound surprising but Medvedev has not won even one French Open match in his 3 attempts. The Russian star does however have a great all-round and all-court game. He has won a few clay titles already and is now regaining his 2019 touch.

Medvedev made it to the semis at this year’s US Open. The slow and cold conditions in France make his game even more dangerous. The world number 5 is surely expected to go deep in the tournament. He has a great chance to overcome Roger Federer and take his singles ranking to world number 4. Among the top 5 male contenders for French Open 2020.
4. Alexander Zverev

3. Dominic Thiem
The Austrian could be called as the best player of 2020 in Grand Slams. He won the 2020 US Open after coming back from being 2 sets down. That magical run in New York may now catalyse Thiem’s dream journey in Paris. The world number 3 is no stranger to the clay slam.
Already a 2 time finalist at Philippe Chatrier, Thiem would now be aiming to go a step further. His biggest hurdle to 2018 and 2019 has been the great Rafa Nadal. Thiem beat the Spaniard in the 2020 Australian Open early this year and would like to take inspiration from that victory. He is one of the top male contenders for French Open 2020.
2. Novak Djokovic
The world number 1 at the top seed comes to Paris on a mix of highs and lows. He recently won the Rome Masters in a convincing fashion to regain his form and confidence. Novak is however still haunted by that inelegant default led exit at the US Open where he lost not just a chance to raise another major but a lot of his reputation too.
The Serbian has a lot going for him this year at the French championships. His greatest rival Rafa Nadal is not in the usual comfort zone. The conditions also favour the Serb superstar more and he is hungry to improve the slam records of Roger and Rafa.

Djokovic is a 2016 champion and 3 time finalist in Paris. He certainly knows a thing or two about playing on the slow clay. However the Serbian is well aware of the great challenge ahead of him in the form of 12 time champ Rafael Nadal and recent US Open winner Dominic Thiem who has already been to 2 finals in Paris on the last 2 occasions. The world number 1 has both the game and the grit to overcome both. Among the top male contenders for French Open 2020.
1. Rafael Nadal
If it is Roland Garros, it has to be Rafael Nadal. The Spaniard comes to Paris with very little practice but with plenty at stake. Nadal has played just one tournament since February this year which was 2 weeks ago in Rome. He was surprisingly dethroned by Diego Schwartzman of Austria in the quarterfinal match.
Rafa has also admitted that the conditions as well as the balls may not suit him this year. However given the Spaniard’s sensational record on the clay of Paris, it would be a suicidal prediction not to place him at the top. The world number 2 will aim to go for a record extending 13th trophy at the Parisian Slam. He also has the chance to match his great rival Roger Federer’s slam count of 20 as well as complete 100 Roland Garros singles victories.
With so much incentive and his so well known intensity, the King of Clay is our top bet to succeed in his kingdom where he has made many legends bite dust in the past. No tennis fan can forget Nadal’s frightening record of 93 wins and just 2 losses in Paris. Leads our list of the top 5 male contenders for French Open 2020.
Those are our 5 top Men’s favourites for this year’s French Open. It would be interesting to see who remains the last man standing in the tournament.
