Federer had defeated Nadal in all of their last 5 encounters. This visibly was running through Nadal’s mind in the 1st game of the match. When Federer forced a break-point in the initial game on Rafa’s serve, it looked that the great Swiss was taking inspiration from his last 5 wins.

Rafa however would not only hold his serve but also broke Federer in the subsequent game. As the wind made conditions difficult for both players Rafa would use it to his advantage. At 5-3 in the closing stage he played a stunning backhand cross court winner to close out the 1st set in his favor.

Federer made a much better start in the 2nd set. He went up 3-0 and it seemed that the match was approaching an even situation. However, the King of Clay upped his game. In a span of 20 minutes he leveled the score 3 games all.
Nadal would continue to up the pressure and at 5-4 in the set he came back from 40-0 to deuce and once again Federer’s serve was under pressure. What followed was enough to show why beating Nadal at French Open is next to impossible.

He tracked down a Federer drop shot and then played a stunner of a backhand to steal the game from Roger and gave himself a seemingly unassailable 2 set advantage.

Before the match started Federer knew he had a mountain to climb. Now after a 2 set deficit it was an Everest to scale. The 20 time Grand Slam champion now began to look a shadow of his own self. Nadal at the other end was constantly upping his own level to make it more difficult for his great rival.

Eventually the great Swiss would succumb and surrender the 3rd set 6-2. The match lasted for 2 hours and 24 minutes giving Nadal a relatively easy win. The smooth sailing ensured that the King of Clay has enough gas left in the tank when he takes on Dominic Thiem at Court Philippe Chatrier in the final.
