Star Sports PBL 2016 starts today with a gala Opening Ceremony

The Star Sports PBL 2016 opened with a gala ceremony today in Mumbai with Dr. Akhilesh Das Gupta, Chairman, Premier Badminton League, announcing the commencement of the scintillating event at Sardar Vallabh Patel Stadium.

Bollywood actor Jacqueline Fernandez was the center of attraction on the ceremonies platform as she made the crowd sweep on their feet with her performance on Bollywood hit songs ‘Je Mainy Yaar Na Mile Te Mar Jawan’ and ‘Chittiyaan Kalaiyaan Ve’.

Then came the time of event anthem which had Music Composers Salim–Sulaiman entertaining the crowd. After the anthem, the composers sang ‘Aye Khuda Mujhako Bata, Tu Rehata Kahaa’, ‘Kurbaan hua’ and ‘Chak De India’ to rock the stage.

Announcing the opening of Star Sports PBL 2016, Dr. Akhilesh Das Gupta, Chairman, Premier Badminton League said, “It’s an honour for me today to be standing in front of this enthusiastic crowd who loves Badminton in the same manner as I do. History is about to be created as the Premier Badminton League will emerge as the most sought badminton event in the world. I would like take this opportunity to thank all stakeholders and partners for their support. Here, I would like to wish good luck to all the teams and players.”

The evening also saw some exciting matches like between Mumbai Rockets vs Awadhe Warriors wherein Gurusai Dutt (MR) beats Sai Praneeth (AW) 14-15 15-10 15-08 in Men’s Singles, R. Gadde (MR) beat G Vrushali (AW) 15-13 15-10 in Women’s Singles, S Tanongsak (AW) beat HS Prannoy (MR) in Men’s Singles, while Bodin Issara and Christiana of Awadhe Warriors won against Kamilla Juhi and Vladimir Ivanov of Mumbai Rockets. While Awadhe Warriors took the Men’s Doubles as their ‘Trump Match’ which meant that Cai Yun and Hendra Gunawan had a job at hand to beat Mathias Boe and Vladimir Ivanov. On the other hand, Mumbai Rockets took the Men’s Singles as their ‘Trump Match’ and hence HS Prannoy had a responsibility to beat Tanongsak and bag the extra point for Mumbai Rockets. The day belonged to Mumbai Rockets which had 2-1 win over Awadhe Warriors in a day full of action.

Speaking to media, Gurusai Dutt said “It was a tough match as he won the first set. But I knew I had to come back and win the game for my team. This win will help us in the next four games and I am happy that I stood upto the expectations of my team. It’s a proud moment as the first game of PBL is in our kitty.”

Speaking to media, R. Gadde said “It was not an easy match. Though I won it convincingly but she gave a tough fight and made me earn my points. I enjoyed the game and I am happy we have won all three games till now. I hope we end the day by taking all games in our favor.”
Men’s Singles

Speaking to media, S Tanongsak said “I still can’t believe I won the match. I could have finished the game in the second set but he came back strong. The same story repeated in the third set when we were yet again tied at 14-14 but I was lucky to have got the winning point. This win is special because it was their trump game and they lost. I am happy I opened my team’s winning account.”

Speaking to media, Mathias Boe and Vladimir Ivanov said “This match was their Trump Match and it was important for them to win. But we were confident that we will take the game away from them. With this we have two wins and hopefully we will continue this for the next three games.”

Speaking to media, Bodin Issara and Christiana said: “This was an important win for us. We had already lost three matches and won one. Hence this win would have got us in a better position. We are happy that we kept our nerves and won the match.
