Sloane Stephens win her second WTA tour title by beating Germany Julia Georges 7-5, 6-2 in Auckland Classic Final.
Stephens is ranked 30th in world rankings. She broke twice in the second set at 1-1 and 4-2 berfore wrapping up the semi-final in 77 minutes. Her semi-final match was interrupted by rain. It took five hours and thirty minutes to beat the former world no. 1 Carolin Wozniacki to progress into the Finals. Stephens beat Caroline by 6-2, 7-6(7/3).
“Finally, I’m done,” she said after winning.
“It feels amazing. To win a tournament is unbelievable.
“I’ve played some really tough players, and to play this morning and come back to play the final is something I’ve never done, so I was really pleased with the way I was able to pull myself together and win.”
The first set in the final went to 5-5 after which Goerges was not able to handle the Stephen’s favourite shot, a powerful cross-court forehand, the same shot which she played to claim her victory in the final set.
Goerges fought back to deuce from being 15-40 down in first set but finally she felt apart. Although she was troubled by th forehand shot of Stephens her biggest problem was the 33 unforced errors which let her down in the finals.
