Kolkata: It’s just another day where the effect of being free has hit an awful low. Lately, there has been a sudden trend where anyone’s nationality is unashamedly questioned or worse, put into limelight; the recent target has been Saina Nehwal.
A role model for the youth of the nation, India’s star shuttler has been termed as “anti national” on a social networking site for endorsing a Chinese phone.
On Monday, Saina posted a picture on Facebook flaunting her new phone, Honor 8. While most people complimented her on her new phone while some took offense and started calling her anti-national.Her timeline was flooded with comments asking her to end her alliance with the Chinese company.
“Kindly don’t promote Chinese product…it’s dangerous for our nation,” replied one ‘fan’ in the comments section.”I am your fan, but if you say buy China product am not. I will say stop this nonsense,” wrote another.
However, Saina also received support from her fans who requested her to pay no attention to such comments.
“Saina Nehwal, you do not listen to these idiots, if Indian government has allowed Chinese companies, which is headed by Modiji, these fringes have no say after that. Modiji himself is appearing in PayTm ads, which partly owned by chinese. GO girl do not care about these idiots.”
Another fan said, “Man people are crazy.. she just flaunted her phone.. and everyone does that once a while.. you go girl.. I support you..”
Ironically, those criticizing Saina failed to realise that Huawei, the company that manufactures Honor, will set up an unit in Chennai as part of the Make in India program.
Saina has suffered a terrible time on court this year. She crashed out in the group stages of the Rio Olympics. She also had a knee injury, which later needed surgery. The former world No.1 also hinted at an early retirement after coming back from her knee injury, which she termed as “quite painful”.
