The start of 2015 was full of uncertainties for Sania Mirza for she parted ways with her long time doubles partner Cara Black who had decided to limit her participation in tournaments, subsequently she teamed up with Hsieh Su-wei of the Chinese Taipei but things didn’t go as per plans and after 5 tournaments of playing together they decided to part ways. It was then in the March of 2015 that Sania got an opportunity to team up with former Swiss World No 1 Martina Hingis and the rest is history.
In what has been a complete turnaround the Indo –Swiss pair have taken the Women’s Doubles by storm.
The duo have been able to complement each other game really well and have managed to form a formidable pair covering each other weaknesses by others strength. The problem that Sania was facing that she was not able to find someone who would excel in the Ad court (on your side of the net, the Ad court is the left side of the court), her previous partners’ lack of skills and in an effort to compensate she was not able to play her game freely Enter Martina Hingis she found find the perfect foil. Martina brings to the game not only her experience but also her ad court skills. And Sania’s with her powerful forehands has transformed the pair into a force to reckon with. More than words and compliments it’s their records in the past one year which speaks for themselves.
Since March of 2015 the duo have won a mind boggling 11 tournaments latest being the Italian Open at Rome.
This also includes three consecutive Grand Slams of Wimbledon 2015, US Open 2015 and Australian Open 2016. In the mix of all this they were also on an unbeaten streak of 41 matches ending in Doha in the quarter finals of Qatar Open in February. However, since then the World No 1 pair has had a tough phase making it to the finals of Madrid and Stuttgart but coming short of winning it. However their win at Rome seems to have ended that slide and as they head into the French Open the only title that eludes them from completing a career Grand Slam they have the favorite tag.
